Is Rural Right for Me?
5 Reasons to seek a Rural Practice
5 Reasons to seek a Rural Practice
Not sure which community suits you best? Don’t rush past those rural opportunities. Here’s a short list of why rural should be on your radar.
1. Provider Incentives
Rural communities need physicians! Incentives to work in a small town are icing on the cake to an already great opportunity. Health Systems in rural communities are known to offer healthy starting bonuses as well as student loan repayment options for physicians who want to work in their communities. In addition, rural communities may participate in federal or state rural health programs providing loan repayment or incentive funding to providers.
2. Medical Staff Culture
Working in a smaller medical community means physicians will know the entire medical staff team. In an ideal practice, this means better collaborative care for patients. Often rural physicians will find a tight-knit medical community - similar to their experience in residency.
3. Leadership Opportunities
Physicians looking to get involved – should look in a rural community. Not only will a rural community be excited about the arrival of a new physician, but most will also welcome new leadership on committees, teams, and councils.
Beyond the medical world, physicians are also welcome to get involved in the local community through various organizations. Going rural is like taking the fast track to get involved and gain leadership experience.
4. Flexibility
Many rural physicians can be flexible with their schedules, longer appointments, or four-day work weeks. Also, did we mention, the commute or lack thereof? Living rural means there won’t be traffic, which equates to more home or adventure time!
5. The People, The Community
While this only skims the surface of the benefits of living in a rural, those who love it also love being part of the community. They are looking for that small-town feel. Physicians will likely know each patient personally - inside and outside of work. Physicians have an intimate look at the different challenges that patients face. They love to work with underserved populations.
If are intrigued, consider rural. Of course, do your research, ask questions to find out about the incentives, the community, and the practice and ensure it is right fit. Contact VDF for a consultation and discuss which rural community is right for you!
